Collecting swarms…night edition
On May 1, 2025 we inspected the 2 hives that contained swarms caught in the middle of April. They were doing well and we were able to spot the queens. No sign of brood or larvae at this point.
We checked our swarm traps and found 2 with forager bees so we knew it was time to move those swarms to hives in the apiary. We like to do this at night because the bees are as active (all the bees at home) and they aren’t as feisty. Swarm season in North Mississippi is April- May. We catch more bees in April.
The second swarm trap in the cow pasture had bees, but they were confused bees from the last swarm caught in that location and were pretty angry. We left them alone after discovering who they were. We could tell because the number of bees was so little and because of their ATTITUDE!
In our experience, bees are not aggressive if they are queen right and the queen is doing her job well. Enjoy this series of videos to give you a taste of swarm trapping.
